In the morning of November 6, 2018, St. Joseph Jesuit Scholasticate of the Vietnam Jesuit Province celebrated the Mass for the Conferral of the Ministries of Acolyte and Lector respectively on 6 second-year scholastics and on 6 first-year scholastics of Theology. Fr. Vincent Pham Van Mam S.J., Provincial of the Vietnam Province, presided at the Mass. Concelebrating with him were Saint Joseph Jesuit Scholasticate Rector, Fr. Joseph Pham Tuan Nghia S.J., Fr. Paul Nguyen Thai Son S.J. (Dean of Theology) and Fr. Michel Truong Thanh Tam S.J. (Spiritual Director). Following that day’s liturgical calendar of the Society of Jesus, we also prayed for all the Jesuits who had departed from this life.

In his homily, Fr. Provincial shared the desire of the Universal Mission of the former Father General, Fr. Adolfo Nicolás S.J., “Send to the whole world”. To become a universal apostle both in a mission abroad and in one’s home country, the Provincial invited everyone to meditate on the first reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans: “None of us lives for himself, and no one dies for himself. For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s” (Rom 14: 7-8). He ardently invited every young Jesuit to actively train himself to integrate the value of the Gospel and to live according to the Jesuit way of proceeding. He strongly expressed his desire for Vietnamese Jesuits to practice internal freedom and indifference in order to belong to God and to His Church. Fr. Mam also advised the brothers who were about to become Lectors and Acolytes to bear in mind that these ministries are an invitation, a process of integration into the Society, into the Body of Christ as well the Church. He wished that they would all fulfill the task entrusted to them by the Society.
